Five modules

Everything AI checks, visible in one click.

Each module maps to a real reason AI assistants choose one page over another. Here is exactly what each score measures and why it matters.

Module 10–100

Answer Capsule

Is your page answering questions AI can extract?

AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity prefer pages that state a clear, structured answer near the top of the content — not buried in paragraphs. Answer Capsule checks whether your page opens with a direct definition, uses question-and-answer formatting, and includes a summary block AI can lift directly into a response.

What it checks

  • Clear definition or summary in the first paragraph
  • Question-and-answer structure (H2/H3 questions followed by direct answers)
  • Summary or TL;DR block detectable on the page

Why it matters

Pages that score well here get their sentences quoted verbatim in AI answers. Low-scoring pages are skipped in favour of more structured competitors.

Module 20–100

Schema

Does your page speak the language AI crawlers understand?

Structured data (schema.org markup) tells AI exactly what type of content is on your page — whether it's a how-to guide, a FAQ, an article, or your organisation's profile. Without it, AI infers structure from raw text, which is less reliable.

What it checks

  • Organization or LocalBusiness schema present
  • FAQPage schema for FAQ content
  • HowTo, Article, or BreadcrumbList schema where applicable

Why it matters

Schema is the single highest-ROI technical fix for AI visibility. Adding a FAQPage schema block can move your citation score meaningfully in a single afternoon.

HowTo, Article, or BreadcrumbList schema where applicable
Module 30–100

Freshness

Does AI trust that your content is up to date?

AI models are trained on snapshots of the web and are tuned to favour recently updated content when answering time-sensitive questions. Freshness checks for visible date signals — published date, modified date, and how recently the page was updated.

What it checks

  • Published date visible on the page
  • Last-modified date present (in meta or visible content)
  • Content updated within the last 90 days

Why it matters

Stale pages lose recommendations to newer competitors even if their underlying content is stronger. A visible "Last updated" line can meaningfully improve AI trust.

Module 40–100

Fan-Out

Can AI cross-reference your claims against trusted sources?

AI treats pages that cite authoritative external sources (academic papers, government sites, established news outlets, Wikipedia) as more credible. Fan-Out checks whether your content links outward to sources AI already trusts.

What it checks

  • At least one external link to an authoritative source
  • Three or more outbound citations present
  • Link to a government, academic, or Wikipedia source

Why it matters

Content with zero outbound citations reads like an unverifiable opinion to AI. Adding three quality external links can improve your authority signal significantly.

Module 50–100

Bot Access

Are you accidentally blocking the AI crawlers you want indexing you?

Many websites unintentionally block AI crawlers like OAI-SearchBot (used by ChatGPT) and PerplexityBot in their robots.txt. Bot Access also checks whether an llms.txt file exists — the emerging standard that tells AI crawlers exactly what your site is about and which pages matter most.

What it checks

  • robots.txt is present and readable
  • OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are not blocked
  • llms.txt file exists at the root of the domain

Why it matters

Blocking OAI-SearchBot while trying to rank in ChatGPT is like blocking Googlebot and expecting Google traffic. This is the easiest category to fix — often a two-line edit.

Questions about the extension

Is the extension really free?

Yes. The Chrome Extension is completely free to install and use. You do not need a Citation Rocket account. There are no hidden limits — all five modules run on every page.

Does it need an account or login?

No account is required for the extension. All five checks run locally in your browser on the page you have open.

What permissions does it need, and why?

The extension requests access to all websites (<all_urls>) so it can read the page content, fetch the robots.txt, and check for llms.txt on the same domain — all of which are needed to run the five-module audit. It does not read your browsing history, send page content to a server, or store any data about you. Scans are performed on-demand only when you click the extension icon.

How is this different from a full Citation Rocket audit?

The extension audits a single page client-side in your browser — it is a fast, real-time check. A full Citation Rocket audit (from the web app) crawls your entire site, queries live AI with real prompts to measure your mention rate, tracks competitors, and builds a full Fix-It Playbook. The extension is the quick diagnostic; the web app is the full treatment.

Does it work on any website, or only mine?

It works on any publicly accessible webpage — your site, a competitor's site, a client's site, or any page you are reviewing before publishing.

Does the extension send my data anywhere?

No. All five checks run entirely client-side in your browser. No page content, URLs, or personal data are sent to Citation Rocket's servers when you use the extension.
